What would you do?… why all patients should have the different options presented to them
Description
A short while ago, my aunt who lives in Canada, sent me an email, in a frantic tone. She said she had just come back from her general dentist after a “cleaning appointment”. During her appointment, she said the doctor came in and said she had to have a tooth extracted and we need to schedule that appointment with the oral surgeon immediately, otherwise there will be pain, discomfort, and infection. When she left the office, an appointment was made with the oral surgeon. My aunt said she was in a blur and things happened so fast. She did not know why, or if the tooth will be replaced. She left the office with great uncertainty.
Patients can be overwhelmed by treatment recommendations suggested at certain times. It can be hard for them to process it. Hence, it is important to clearly communicate the patient with a full condition assessment and explain the exact reason for why a certain treatment option is recommended so that it would make them feel much more at ease with the proposed plan.
Can this scenario happen in our practice or yours? What would you do?… Why?
